IPL 3 ( Day-1) : KKR surprise win over Deccan Chargers

The wait is finally over as the IPL 3 is back with a bang. DLF IPL 2010 started today with a grand opening ceremony with a number of celebrities performing at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai. The first match of the IPL 2010 season 3 is being played between the defending champions Deccan Chargers and Kolkatta Knight Riders.

Adam Gilchrist, the captain of Hyderabad's DC won the toss and elected to field first. In the first over itself, Vaas grabbed two wickets, giving the Deccan Chargers the much needed start.
After a few initial hiccups, Shahrukh Khan's KKR with the help of Angelo Matthews and Owais Shah batted brilliantly and took the KKR to a respectable total.

In the first 10 overs they were down in the dumps with 57 for 4 and yet went on to post a fighting 161 for 4 in the end. The last 10 overs fetched a staggering 104 runs. Angelo Mathews (65) and Owais Shah (58) resurrected KKR innings by putting on a scintillating 131-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

It was Mathews who took control and counter attacked in style. He punished the Deccan bowling attack ruthlessly, carting four sixes and five fours on his way to 46-ball 65. Shah played a more sedate knock in the beginning, giving strike to his partner who was on rampage. Later, he joined the party and helped himself to a fine 46-ball half-century, which was peppered with three sixes and equal number of boundaries.

On the other side it was Gilchrist ( 54 from 35 balls) only who put Deccan into struggle for some time. They were going with a decent pace -99 for 1 in 11 overs - at time, but after the fall of Gilchrist they lost there 6 wickets and add just 43 runs to the total, even in the presence of some flowing hitters - Gibbs, Symonds and Rohit Sharma.

Deccan goofed up the chase big time after a superb fifty from Gilchrist. Laxman, Gibbs, Symonds and Sharma got out to poor shots and they eventually paid the price. Credit to Kolkata's bowlers for not giving up and credit to Owais Shah and Angelo Mathews for stunning counter attacks after Vaas had left Kolkata's innings in disarray.

After enduring two poor campaigns, Kolkata will be thrilled with this result.

Kolkata Knight Riders 161 for 4 (Mathews 65*, Shah 58*, Vaas 2-22) beat Deccan Chargers 150 for 7 (Gilchrist 54, Langeveldt 2-26) by 11 runs
